Screen Door Falling Off Screen door keeps falling off?

A sliding screen door rides on small spring-loaded rollers, top and bottom. When they wear out, or the frame gets bent, the door lifts out of its track with the lightest bump. It’s usually a small repair.

Likely causes

Why screen doors fall off

Most common first. The numbers match the drawing.

Drawing of a sliding screen door in front of a glass slider. Numbered markers: 1: Worn or broken rollers, at the screen door’s bottom rollers. 2: Roller tension too loose, at the screen door’s top rollers. 3: A bent frame, at the screen door frame. 4: Bent or dirty screen track, at the screen track on the sill. 1 2 3 4
  1. Cause 1: Worn or broken rollers Most common

How to tell: It drags or wobbles, and one corner sits lower than the other.

Screen door rollers are small and often plastic. Sun and sand wear them down, and they crack. A door on bad rollers sits loose in the track and pops out.

  2. Cause 2: Roller tension too loose

How to tell: It lifts out of the track with a light push.

Springs in the rollers press the door up and down into its tracks. When the springs weaken or the adjustment is set too loose, nothing holds it in.

  3. Cause 3: A bent frame

How to tell: The door looks twisted, or there’s a gap at one corner when it’s closed.

Screen frames are light aluminum. A push on the mesh, a pet, a gust of wind or a knock can rack the frame out of square, and a bent frame won’t stay on its track.

  4. Cause 4: Bent or dirty screen track

How to tell: The thin outer rail on the sill is dented, bent or packed with sand.

The screen runs on its own thin rail on the outside of the sill. It dents easily, and sand packs in around it.

Before you book

Try this first

Screen doors are light, but their frames bend easily. Go gently.

Leave the glass door alone

Don’t take the sliding glass panel out to get at the screen track, and don’t try to bend a screen frame straight by hand. Glass panels are heavy, and aluminum screen frames kink.

  1. Clear sand and leaves off the screen track, the thin outer rail on the sill.

  2. Slide it slowly and watch the bottom corners. A roller that isn’t turning, or a corner that drops, points to the rollers.

  3. If it’s come off, don’t force it back in. Lean it against a wall out of the wind, or lay it flat.

  4. Send us a photo of the bottom corners. Screen rollers come in many sizes, and a photo means we bring the right ones.

FAQ

Screen door questions

Something we didn’t cover? Email us.

Why does my screen door keep coming off?

Usually the rollers. They’re small, often plastic, and sun and sand wear them out. Worn rollers let the door sit loose in the track, and a bump or a gust lifts it out.

Can it be fixed, or do I need a new screen door?

Most screen doors that fall off can be fixed. If the frame is too far gone, we’ll tell you before any work starts.

Can you rescreen it too?

Yes. Rescreening is part of our screen door service. If the mesh is torn or loose, mention it when you book so we come ready for it.

Several of my screen doors do this. Can you do them all?

Yes. Several doors? Ask about multi-door savings. For condo buildings and HOAs, see our condo service.

Is the estimate free for a small job like this?

Yes. The estimate is free, and there’s no minimum, however small the job.
